Rome's Vatican City

Vatican City

pictures from vatican city No trip to Rome would be complete without a trip to Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museum. Vatican City is a 100 acre independent country contained within Rome with its own postal system, armed guards, and even its own radio station.

Start with the Vatican Museum and marvel at all of the glories of the ancient world. Some of the highlights include works by Michelangelo, Raphael, and Dali. Some of the most famous works include the Laocoon, the Belevedere Torso, The School of Athens, and Nero's huge bathtub. And of course the Vatican Museum's grand finale is the Sistine Chapel.

The exit of the Sistine Chapel drops you off in the line to ascend up to the holiest dome in the world - the dome of St. Peter's Basilica. The wait and the climb are worth it. Visit the rooftop of the Church and then continue the climb up the the dome to view Michelangelo mosaics up close. When you make the desent down, mingle around the Basilica. Wonder at the huge seven story alter and the spot where Charlemange was crowned the Holy Roman Emperor. Don't forget to stop and stare at the Pieta on your way out. Imagine a 24 year old Michelangelo carving the stone. If you have time to wait in line to view the crypt in which tombs of popes reside.

Be sure to write yourself a post card and mail it from Vatican City or enjoy a Coke-A-Cola on the roof of St. Peter's Basilica - just be sure to set a side an entire day to view some of the most famous art and most signficant history in the world.

Did you know that when you are in Vatican City that you are in a sovereign city-state. This is the world's smallest sovereign nation at approximately 108.7 acres. The formal name for Vatican City is the State of The Vatican City. It was created in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty and is governed by the Bishop of Rome which happens to be the pope or Holy See.

The Vatacan City is defended internally by The Swiss Guard. The Swiss Guard was established in 1506 by Pope Julius II. At first, the Swiss Guard was comprised of Swiss mercenies. Today the Swiss Guard is comprised of just about 100 young men who must be catholics from Switzerland. The Swiss Guard also act as the personal body guard of the Pope.

All I wanted is for prayers to be said for me. As, I left my job and starting real estate. I was wondering if the pope could pray
    for me to help myself
    earn a living...could use the prayers....as,
I have alot on my plate
    and live alone.

    God Bless
    Beth

I am a struggling Catholic and saw again a RC priest charged 47 times with molesting children(girls this time) Why do I struggle so hard to worship God according to the Catholic faith when all I have seen since I was young is priests and nuns persecuting and hurting peole in the name of the catholic church. Pray for me to accept and understand and guide me to show my love of God thru the Cathollic faith

The Vatican was beautiful. Visit the museum later in the day and there is no line. The Pieta was my favorite.
