Rome is one of the most breathtaking and exciting cities in all of Europe and there are many reasons that Rome is referred to as the eternal city. The city is made even more wonderful by the layers and layers of history piled beneath the modern day city of Rome. It can be chaotic, but mingle with the locals and try to imerse yourself in the Roman way life. Stop for an expresso on the way to your first stop and take your time enjoying a long lunch maybe follwed by a siesta. End the evening with a late dinner and a gellato before turning in to get ready for the next day. There is so much to see and do in Rome it can seem overwhelming - enjoy it - the overwhelming feeling is part of Rome.Popular sites not to miss in Rome inclue the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum (which is the international symbol of Rome), the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and Vatican City including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. A trip to Rome would not be complete without a relaxing stop at the Trevi fountain. This hugh fountain has water gushing from 24 spouts while Triton blows his conch shell. The fountain is beautiful, especially at night, and if you are not impressed by water, just look around. The Trevi fountain is a hang out for all of the most beautiful people in Rome strolling home from dinner. While at the Trevi fountain, you must perform the ritual that all visitors and romantics perform while visiting the Trevi fountain. Toss a coin over your left shoulder to ensure a trip back to the eternal city of Rome.
The Colosseum is a 2000 year old example of the great engineering minds of Rome. Tour the grounds and then proceede inside to view the magnificant arena which was home to the gladiatiors and 50,000 screaming fans. The Pantheon is a temple dedicated to all gods. The interior of the Pantheon is breathtaking with its soaring dome and 30 foot skylight. Mingle a while in the piazza outside the Pantheon and enjoy the fountain and great street side cafes. The Spanish Steps should also not be missed - many famous authors have been inspired by this view. Vatican City is a destination all in itself, housing St. Peter's Basilica the Vatican museum and of course the Sistine Chapel.
Rome is also know for its great shopping and wonderful food. Exclusive shops such as Gucci and Prada are located along the Via Del Corso and a perfect day is complete with a great Italian meal near the Villa Borghese and a walk back to the Piazza Navona for a raspberry gellato and shows by street performers.
While there is certainly know shortage of busses, Vespa's and automobiles in Rome, the Eternal City is definitely best experienced walking. The crowded daytime streets are packed bumper-to-bumper and you will see those on foot walking much faster than your bus. While the streets of Rome are thinned out at night, you will miss the romance and splendour of strolling slowly about Roman streets and alleyways.
So throw a coin over your shoulder into Trevi Fountan and march to the top of the Spanish Steps because there is only one place you can do this in the world and that is Rome. Rome was not built in a day, so dont think you can see all of Rome in a day. Take some time to vist Rome at a liesurly pace or hire a Roman tour guide for a day for a real treat and insiders look at Rome.

We were in Rome during the World Cup and the excitement was amazing. We had a blast and everyone was so friendly. I miss the morning expressos.
